Introduction

Education is undergoing a vast transformation. In the face of budget cuts, educators are meeting their challenges in creative and innovative ways. A growing trend in the classroom is using media and technology as tools for learning. As the internet provides new approaches to consumption, students and teachers are using web 2.0 technology like streaming video and social networks to connect to their students.

- What is the future of youth media?
- What role, if any, can social networks play in the classroom?
- How can after-school programs maximize their technology?
- What are the most effective project-based learning models out there?
- What media outlets does VONY have available for teachers uses and future projects in the works.

These and other questions will be discussed at the 1st Annual Youth Media Conference and Benefit, a professional development and multimedia event.

Voices of New York

The mission of Voices of New York is to provide youth, educators and parents with media and arts based education programs and services, which promote positive outcomes in the school and at home. Youth programs are focused on getting them engaged in their communities and building the critical skills needed for students to succeed in high school and college, using the latest in 21st century learning models. Methods include creative expression exercises, social networking, video production, and other multimedia projects. Educators receive in-classroom support via media study guides, online tools, field-trips and other resources to help integrate our programs into their curriculums. Providing youth mentors and connecting the link between education and the world of work is an important part of our foundation. Parents who seek to improve communication between them and their kids can take part in workshops and round tables, moderated by parents. In addition to these programs and services, the organization will produce events promoting community engagement and raising awareness of social issues.
